He has recently retired and although he has always been a tremendous wealth of knowledge he has a renewed sense of sharing information. So we have spent some quality time listening and sharing with him and during one of this conversation he made mention of "walking the ball". This was a term we had never heard before so we listened and he mentioned it again, but we could not determine the meaning of the phrase from it's use in the conversation. So we asked, walk the ball, what do you mean? Walking the ball is when a position player makes a play on the ball and throws it to first base or to the cut off man properly and his momentum carries him 2-4 steps in line with the throw directly towards the target. You can see this when watching Big League games. It is taught in the professional game regularly and helps players use their body more efficiently to be accurate. We have always called this following your throw and use it regularly to help younger players increase arm strength and accuracy. By using this technique your team will quickly become a better defensive group. |
